Daily Devotional - May 17, 2026

Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon on Sunday, May 17, 2026:

Day 1: The Brevity of Life
Reading: James 4:13-17; Psalm 39:4-7
Devotional: Life is but a vapor—here for a moment, then gone. Like steam rising from a kettle, our days appear briefly before vanishing into eternity. This sobering reality isn't meant to discourage us but to awaken us to what truly matters. When we grasp that our 70-80 years are infinitesimal compared to eternity, our priorities shift dramatically. The question isn't whether life is short, but what we're doing with the time we have. Are you making plans without consulting God? Today, pause before your next decision and ask, "Lord, if You will, what would You have me do?" This simple practice transforms presumption into humble dependence, ensuring that your brief life creates an eternal impact.

Reflection: What plans have you made without asking God's will? How might your priorities change if you truly lived like your life is a vapor?

Day 2: The Sin of Omission
Reading: James 4:17; Luke 12:47-48; Matthew 25:14-30
Devotional: "To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." These words pierce through our comfortable Christianity. We often think of sin as the wrong things we do, but God also holds us accountable for the right things we fail to do. You know you should share the gospel with that neighbor. You know you should spend more intentional time with your children. You know you should serve in your church. Knowing isn't enough—obedience is required. The watchman who falls asleep fails his city. The servant who buries his talent disappoints his master. What good has God placed before you that remains undone? Today is the day to act. Don't let another moment pass in disobedience to what you already know.

Reflection: What is one specific "good" that God has shown you to do that you've been avoiding? What's your first step toward obedience?

Day 3: Your First Ministry—The Family
Reading: Ephesians 5:22-6:4; Deuteronomy 6:4-9
Devotional: Before you're called to any platform or public ministry, God calls you to your family. Husbands, are you loving your wives as Christ loved the church—sacrificially, protectively, purposefully? Wives, are you respecting and supporting your husbands, building your home with wisdom? Parents, are you raising your children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, or merely providing for their physical needs? Children, are you honoring your parents? Your family is under attack. Satan knows that if he can destroy the family, he destroys the foundation of society and the church. Your home is your first mission field, your primary ministry. The greatest legacy you'll leave isn't your career accomplishments but a family that loves and serves Jesus. Invest there first.

Reflection: How would your family describe your spiritual leadership and presence? What one change could you make this week to strengthen your first ministry?

Day 4: Speaking Truth in a Culture of Silence
Reading: Matthew 10:32-33; Acts 4:18-20; 2 Timothy 1:7-8
Devotional: "I don't like to talk about religion or politics." How often have we surrendered entire categories of conversation to avoid discomfort? Yet when we remain silent about what Jesus says matters, we abandon our post as watchmen. The fear of man brings a snare, but those who trust in the Lord are safe. Speaking truth doesn't mean being combative or graceless—let your speech always be seasoned with salt. But it does mean being willing to say what God says, even when it's unpopular. When someone dismisses discussing your faith, they're really saying they don't want to talk about your Best Friend. Would you let someone speak against your spouse without response? Jesus deserves our faithful witness. Be gracious, be loving, but be bold.

Reflection: Where have you remained silent when you should have spoken for Jesus? Who in your life needs to hear the gospel from you?

Day 5: The Necessity Upon You
Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23; Jeremiah 1:4-10; Isaiah 6:8
Devotional: "Necessity is laid upon me. Woe is me if I preach not the gospel." Paul describes a spiritual headlock—an inescapable calling that God places on certain lives. Perhaps you've felt it: the persistent conviction that God wants more from you, that full-time ministry beckons. Don't believe the lies: "I'm too young," "I'm not capable," "I'm too far down another path." God called Jeremiah as a youth, empowered Moses despite his speech impediment, and redirected Jesus from carpentry at age 30. If God has placed this necessity upon you, the question isn't about your adequacy but your obedience. It's not by might nor power, but by His Spirit. If you would stand before God on your deathbed with regret for not answering His call, take the first step today.
Reflection: Has God called you to ministry or a specific work for Him? What lie has kept you from moving forward? What's your next step of obedience?
